Exploring the Nexus Between Climate and Inequality, specifically on Labour Rights

Overview

The Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF) is implementing the three-year programme, “Exploring the Nexus Between Climate and Inequality, specifically on Labour Rights” in India, Bangladesh and Brazil.

The project aims to:

  • Raise awareness of the connections between climate action, inequality, and labour through international and local media
  • Explore and document the impacts of transitions to low-carbon economies on labour, livelihoods and rights, amplifying voices of local community members.
  • Spark discussions among different stakeholders on climate action and “just transitions” and disseminate discussion findings to support responsible and well-thought-through low-carbon transitions.

Climate change is exacerbating climate risks and economic inequalities across supply chains throughout urban/rural contexts both in the formal and informal sectors. While there are increasing attempts to challenge emerging risks more must be done to understand the real impact of these actions, especially at the nexus of climate change, inequality and labour rights. In order to forward positive climate action, hold decision-makers and businesses to account, and raise the voices of workers at the aforementioned nexus, the programme will carry out global news coverage using the extensive experience TRF has in reporting on issues of Just Transition, organise capacity building training for journalists and civil society representatives, and implement multi-stakeholder convening initiatives for forward-looking dialogues between business leaders, policymakers, government and civil society.
